Apple Mail on Mac

The paste route. Works on any recent macOS and takes about a minute.

  1. Edit the signature above, then click Copy signature.
  2. In Mail, open Mail → Settings → Signatures.
  3. Select michael@askeleven.com in the left column, then click + to add a signature and name it AskEleven.
  4. Uncheck “Always match my default message font” under the preview pane. Skip this and Mail flattens everything to your compose font.
  5. Select the placeholder text in the preview pane, delete it, and paste (⌘V).
  6. Set Choose Signature at the bottom to AskEleven so it goes on new mail automatically.
If pasting misbehaves — some macOS versions drop the images or refuse to keep the layout. Use Download .mailsignature instead and follow the steps below.

Apple Mail on Mac — file method

The reliable fallback. Drops the exact HTML into Mail’s own signature store.

  1. In Mail, go to Mail → Settings → Signatures, click +, name it AskEleven, and uncheck “Always match my default message font”. Leave the placeholder text alone.
  2. Quit Mail completely (⌘Q). Mail rewrites these files on exit, so this matters.
  3. Click Download .mailsignature above.
  4. In Finder, press ⇧⌘G and go to ~/Library/Mail/. Open the highest V folder (V10, V11…), then MailData/Signatures/.
  5. Sort by Date Modified. The newest .mailsignature file is the one you just created — copy its filename (a long UUID).
  6. Rename the downloaded file to that exact UUID filename and replace the original.
  7. Select the file, press ⌘I, and tick Locked. This stops Mail from overwriting it.
  8. Reopen Mail. The signature is there — assign it under Choose Signature.

iPhone & iPad

iOS has no signature import, so the signature travels by email.

  1. On the Mac, open a new message, paste the signature, and send it to yourself.
  2. On the iPhone, open that message. Long-press the signature → Select All → Copy.
  3. Go to Settings → Apps → Mail → Signature (older iOS: Settings → Mail → Signature).
  4. Choose Per Account if you have more than one account, clear the box, and paste.
  5. If it lands as plain text, shake the phone and tap Undo once — that restores the formatted paste. Then leave Settings to save.
iOS renders the signature but won’t let you edit its layout. Redo these steps whenever you change anything here.

Good to know

Images are hosted, not embedded. The headshot, logo and social icons are linked by URL from this site, which keeps the signature small and stops Mail from attaching files to every message you send. Keep this page deployed and the images keep working.
Social icons start empty. AskEleven has no public profiles listed, so the row is off by default. Click Add social icons, then click each icon to set its link — any icon you leave unset is dropped when you copy.
